2019 Project Hindmarsh planting weekend

by | Latest News

Project Hindmarsh heads back to Nhill for our 2019 annual planting extravaganza!

The planting weekend will be held on 5-7 July 2019 and hosted at the Nhill Showgrounds, on the Western Hwy right next door to the Nhill Caravan Park. We will be planting three sites this year, one one east, one north and one west of Nhill. Our site out east is between Gerang Gerung and Glenlee, a lovely remnant Yellow Gum and Mallee woodland adjacent to a cleared area covered in native grass. We will be planting a suite of rare and endangered species on this site. Our site out west is a Box/Gum/Buloke woodland, also with a lovely patch of native grasses. The northern site is a small failed direct seeding site.

Volunteers are needed to help us plant 13,000 trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses across the three sites. The Saturday night feast will again be catered for by the Karen community. It’s worth coming just for the food!

For accommodation, there is the Nhill Caravan Park, which has cabins, plus powered and unpowered camping sites. There are three motels in Nhill, plus the Union Hotel. There are also powered and unpowered camping sites at the showgrounds. Public transport is from Southern Cross station to Nhill. V/Line operates a rail service to Ararat, then a connecting coach to Horsham and Nhill. Those wishing to catch public transport will need to make their own bookings. HLN will operate a pick-up and drop-off service to and from the lodge on the Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. For accommodation and public transport details, please see our website www.hindmarshlandcare.org.au

Project Hindmarsh is the Hindmarsh Landcare Network’s most successful and well known flagship program. Starting in 1998, the Project Hindmarsh planting weekend is the longest running event of its kind in Australia. This year’s event is supported by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Victoria, the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Ace Radio 3WM.
